During our visit to Japan in 1995 I was approached with requests to sculpt the animals for the Asian zodiac, or “Eto” in Japanese. I completed Chi Chi in January of 1996, as this was the Year of the Mouse. Those born in this year are said to be cheerful, optimistic and talented in many fields. Golf is an ever-increasing pastime in Japan. While there, I was curious about the numerous large, netted structures that are seen throughout Japan’s major cities. Resembling the draped works of the artist Christo, these nets house golf driving ranges and are often several stories tall. Chi Chi is obviously a fan of the game, too. Let us hope that he is careful to stay out of the (sand) traps!
