Uncle Sam has long been a figure representing the United States. In the 19th century he was often depicted as a cartoon figure on stilts. Then, during World War 1, the artist, James Montgomery Flagg, drew him as a macho leader, pointing his finger and saying “Uncle Sam Wants You!” My Uncle Sam is “joining” you in being proud of our country. This liberty bell is a replica of the 18th century original that resides in Philadelphia and is cherished by all Americans. The crack in the bell ocurred when it was struck while being rung for George Washington’s birthday in 1846. The inscription is as meaningful in this era of pride in our free society as it was when cast in 1751: “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof.”
